Alexandria, VA 22314

The Alexandria Sesquicentennial Commemoration Committee (SCC) is seeking volunteers to assist in its program directed toward children and families at Lloyd House on Sunday, October 26th from 2-4 PM.  In good weather, activities will be on the large brick rear patio-otherwise, in the house.  The SCC would like people to read stories about important figures and events – or better still, tell stories about their ancestors’ (or other favorite figures) experiences before, during and after the War.  Maybe some will talk about why their ancestors and others fought and what they fought for.  Especially nice if pictures and other mementoes are available.  (Note:  The Alexandria Library has lots of recommended read-aloud books glorifying Lincoln.  The system is ordering one on RE Lee due out this summer – otherwise, nil! Ditto nil for other Southern heroes.  If you have books about Southern heroes you are willing to bring, please do so!  Because Washington was honored by both sides, we will also use books about him.

Women and children are most welcome as volunteers too (This can be a family activity for all)!  We need people to demonstrate and teach crafts such as sewing, knitting, crocheting, etc., as well as games played in the 19c. such as marbles and horseshoes, etc. (bring yours, borrow or just talk about).  We’d like to teach songs (acapella) or with someone who plays the guitar, harmonica, etc.  People in uniform and antebellum dress can talk about their attire and accouterments such as swords, guns, etc.  Also, bring and explain the symbolism and meaning of the CSA flags then and now (Let’s rear a generation that knows they are not racist emblems).  If folks have other talents or suggestions for activities not mentioned above, please offer them to Ellen Tabb at: ProfTabb1@hotmail.com.
